Project Description
An architectural design studio class of the University of Oregon is collaborating with Peace Corps Volunteer Maridee BonaDea to generate design proposals for a new artisans’ center in Koutiala, Mali.
The Union of Associations of Artisans of Koutiala represents a diverse group of craftspeople including, but not limited to, tailors, bogolan cloth makers, weavers, woodcarvers, metal smiths and members of the building trade. The facilities that currently house the Union are no longer suitable for their needs and the University students hope to foster ideas for a new facility that will support learning, advance the exchange of ideas and facilitate the artisans’ business development and marketing.
Adjunct Professor Naoto Sekiguchi is in communication with Maridee, and she is sharing information about Koutiala and its artisans with the students. As the summer session continues, students will be posting information about their background research and design process. Eventually the final designs will be available on-line to share with the Union of Associations of Artisans of Koutiala and other interested parties.
